For the Best Natural Honey

 

 

As a part of the Second International Conference of the Arab Beekeeping Association and the 15th Conference of the Asian Apicultural Association, which will be held at Abu Dhabi Exhibition Center – United Arab Emirates, from 1-3 April 2019.

INTRODUCTION

The contest aims to contribute to the development of methods of honey packing, exhibiting and marketing, in addition to highlighting all the up to date developments in the field of bees, and to create a spirit of competition between the exhibitors of honey and exhibitors of the tools, accessories and requirements of beekeeping at the Second International Conference of the Arab Beekeeping Association, which is held on the sidelines of the World Forum of Innovations in Agriculture, where 3 prizes were awarded for the Best Liquid Honey Category (dark, golden and creamy) in addition to a prize for the Best Crystalized Honey Category and a prize for the Best Comb Honey Category, in accordance with international standards approved in the evaluation of honey contests under the auspices of Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority and the Arab Beekeeping Association.

All exhibitors at the Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture as well as beekeepers in the Arab World can participate in the various contests. Each participant will receive the criteria that the arbitrators will adopt in evaluating the entries, which include laboratory standards along with the general quality standards. The results of the evaluation and the winners will be announced on the second day of the Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture, April 2, 2019.

 

General Rules and Instructions

  • An international arbitration committee shall be formed, to include local experts who are not participating in the award.
  • Absolute neutrality of arbitration committee shall be ensured, where the name of the participant in the contest will not be shown to the members of the arbitration committee.
  • The exhibitor shall accept and agree to participate in the contest in accordance with the rules, instructions and standards approved for the contest.
  • The arbitration committee shall determine the results of the evaluation of the different criteria and announce the results to the participants.
  • Only one category (dark, golden or creamy honey) is allowed to participate in the Liquid Honey Contest.
  • A contestant may participate in both the Liquid Honey Contest and the Honey Comb Contest.
  • The registration form must be filled out for each sample containing all the required information and attached to the samples.
  • Samples sent after the contest is finished may not be returned, as they shall be considered as the property of the conference.
  • Samples that do not conform to the standard will be excluded from participation in the contest.
  • It is not allowed to neither touch samples during the exhibition nor take any of them at the end thereof.
  • The award of the arbitration committee is final and binding.
  • The arbitration committee shall grant winners (shield + certificate of honor).
  • The arbitration committee requires that the winner be present during the receipt of the award, and to be registered in the presence of the conference through: http://www.innovationsinagriculture.com/en/apiarab-registration, taking into consideration that registration is free.

 

Receiving samples:

  • The contestant shall deliver the samples personally or send them by mail accompanied by the samples’ form (attached).
  • The Forum is not responsible for any shipping, transportation and receipt costs.
  • The deadline for receiving samples will be Thursday, 28 February 2019.
  • No samples will be received after the specified date.
  • Samples are received daily at Bani Yas Research Station in Bani Yas, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, during business hours from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

First: Conditions for participation in the Liquid Honey Contest

 

  1. To deliver of 1 kg of honey divided equally into two packages of the same specifications and quality (one for chemical analysis, the other for sensory and physical analysis),
  2. Packets must be of transparent and clear glass with a metal cover similar to Figure 1,
  3. Packages shall be cylindrical,
  4. It is not allowed to stick any label or put any distinguished mark on the packages sent,
  5. Cleanliness of liquid honey bottles and their covers is required,
  6. Filling the packages is required, leaving a vertical space as shown in the figure.
  7. Honey shall be homogenous and of natural color, free from defects, impurities and crystallization.

Characteristics of the best quality Liquid Honey

  • Homogeneity,
  • Free from impurities,
  • Free from foreign materials such as waxy residues,
  • Free from air bubbles,
  • Free from foam (white layers floating on the surface)
  • To be normal in odor and taste
  • Hygienic

Second: Conditions of participation in the Crystallized (Granular) Honey Contest

 

  1. To deliver of 1 kg of honey divided equally into two packages of the same specifications and quality (one for chemical analysis, the other for sensory and physical analysis),
  2. Packets must be of transparent and clear glass with a metal cover similar to that in the Figure No. 1,
  3. Packages shall be cylindrical,
  4. It is not allowed to stick any label or put any distinguished mark on the packages sent,
  5. Cleanliness of liquid honey bottles and their covers is required,
  6. Filling the packages is required, leaving a vertical space as shown in the figure.
  7. Crystalized Honey shall be free from defects and impurities with a natural color.

 

Characteristics of the best quality Crystalized Honey

  • Crystals shall be homogeneous in size
  • Degree of crystallization (full or partial)
  • Free from impurities
  • Degree of honey hardening
  • Free from foreign materials
  • Normal in odor and taste
  • Hygienic

 

Samples of honey (liquid and crystallized) will be analyzed according to the following criteria:

  1. Moisture content
  2. Sucrose content
  3. Glucose content
  4. Fructose content
  5. Acidity
  6. Ash
  7. HMF
  8. Diastase activity

 

*** Non-matching samples will be excluded from participation in the contest and will not be returned to the contestant.

Third: Conditions for participation in the Honeycomb Contest

 

  1. To deliver (1) full wax disc is not fragmented.
  2. To place the comb in a container with a transparent surface and bottom.
  3. It is not allowed to stick any label or put any distinguished mark on the packages sent,
  4. Cleanliness of packages is required.

 

Characteristics of the quality of Honeycomb Contest

  • Maturity (complete and close six eyes)
  • Comb Color
  • Odor and taste
  • Leveling of the upper and lower surface of the combs
  • The presence of pollen
  • Hygienic
